3 Proactive Ways to Overcome Stress Before Stress Overcomes You
May 16 2022 - There isn’t a person on earth who isn’t subjected to some level of stress every day of their lives. Sometimes it is the result of a minor stressor such as spilling coffee down the front of your shirt as you are about to walk out the door to work in the morning. Other times, the trigger is a major issue that can have radical consequences in your life if not managed. This is the time to get proactive. If you let that stressor sit there eating away at you, chances are it will become almost unmanageable over time.
1. Take the Bull by the Horns
There are times when the stressor is so extreme it doesn’t seem like there is a viable solution. One of those times would be the accumulation of a debt you hadn’t counted on that is so large it will take a considerable amount of time to be repaid. This has been the case in Colorado where employees were overpaid and didn’t notice their hourly rate was wrong on their paystubs. Even if the overpayment was a mistake on the part of the employer, the employee is responsible for paying it back.
The proactive thing to do would be to immediately discuss repayment solutions with your employer. If they demand payment in full out of one check that would put your family in a financial bind, you could consult with Baird Quinn about wage overpayment recovery in Colorado. Firms like this represent both employers and employees in this type of case, so they would be the most likely to negotiate a viable repayment plan acceptable to you and your employer.
2. Face Fear for What It Is
If you stop to think about it, what is it about a stressful situation that can quickly overcome you? Most often it is fear that you will be unable to do anything about it. You aren’t exactly stressed over the event but rather the consequences of the event. That’s fear plain and simple. Let’s look at the person who spilled coffee down the front of their shirt. There are two possible proactive solutions here. You could go to work soiled or you could make a quick phone call to say you may be a few minutes late. That is better than clocking in tardy and you proactively notified your place of employment.
3. Remember You Are Not Alone
At the end of the day, it is a good idea to remember that there isn’t a person on earth who hasn’t faced issues like the one you are now dealing with. If you ignore it thinking no one will ever notice just how much you were overpaid, the amount might be so high it will land you in serious trouble and result in a mark against your credit in a debt collections report. Whether you seek advice from an employment lawyer, talk it out with friends as suggested by the Harvard Business Review, or simply try to work out a repayment plan with your employer, be proactive.
Stress can lead to a major breakdown if you don’t deal with it the minute it weighs heavily on you. If you fail to act because of fear, you are allowing the trigger to take control. In the borrowed words of Franklin D. Roosevelt, "There is nothing to fear but fear itself." In other words, get proactive!
